DIRECTOR’S NOTE
This piece is a love letter to Dante’s Inferno and to classic clowning.
The seed of this piece had its inception a decade ago in a devised theatre class in my final semester at Lewis & Clark College. I knew I wanted to make something inspired by Inferno for my final project, while my friend wanted to make something with clowning, and we decided, “Why not both?”
Why Dante?
I first read Inferno, the first third of Dante Alighieri’s Divina Commedia, in high school and was immediately obsessed. Not only are his dark and detailed descriptions of Hell totally engrossing, but I was so struck by the audacity he had to put himself at the center of the story. Somehow we are to believe that he is special enough to get a personal tour of the afterlife? Just because he was having a midlife crisis? I was struck by the struggle between Dante the writer and Dante the character. Dante the character meets people in Hell that he greatly empathizes with, that he is even shocked to find there. But who put them there? He did! Again, the audacity…
The theological, philosophical, political, and literary themes of Inferno are fascinating and have been the inspiration for many artists and storytellers before now. However, I was always fascinated by why Dante felt compelled to write this poem, why he needed to send himself on an expedition through the torments of the afterlife. Why lay out his own vision of morality like this? At some point in life we all confront our own ideas of right and wrong, both those we inherited and those we formed ourselves. Though few of us turn it into an epic poem, we all grapple with our notions of judgement, of our own sins and the perceived sins of others. For me Dante’s personal journey and motivations have always been the most compelling part of the Inferno. For this project, I also took inspiration from his other best known work, La Vita Nuova, to flesh out the details of his relationship to his muse, Beatrice Portinari, who is a central figure in the Divine Comedy.
Why Clowning?
My dad went to clown college. Yes, literally. Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Clown College. And I was subsequently raised on the art of clowns—from Charlie Chaplin to Bill Irwin, from Bugs Bunny to the Marx Brothers, and from Cirque du Soleil to Teatro ZinZanni.
The Clown is an innocent interloper, the audience’s conduit to the most absurd, the most fantastical, and the most poignant of what life has to offer. The Clown is a mirror to human nature from its most glorious to its most grotesque. To me, that is who Dante is for us on this journey through Hell: the wide-eyed, wondering observer, traveling to all the places that we aren’t willing or able to go ourselves. Dante’s telling of Inferno is scary, dark, poignant, beautiful, gross, and often undeniably funny. Not to mention full of bodily fluids and functions. It felt like ripe territory for clowning.
I hope you enjoy this piece as much as we enjoyed making it.
